Below is a message from a colleague at St. Louis Univ. School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO:
Dear Future Physician,

Dear Future Physician,
I write this e-mail to offer insight into Neurological Surgery and to make you aware of an exciting new society aimed at facilitating the medical student and resident experience of achieving their goals of becoming neurosurgeons.
What is Neurosurgery?
Neurosurgery is a very focused and technically-demanding field that deals with medical and surgical treatments aimed at alleviating and curing diseases that deal with every branch of the nervous system. Neurosurgeons deal with a wide range of neurological illnesses that include brain aneurysms, tumors, congenital malformations, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's Disease. Neurosurgeons also routinely deal with spinal disorders including tumors involving the spinal cord. As one of the last true frontiers of medicine, this young subspecialty needs brilliant and innovative minds to further fine-tune available treatments and develop new ones.
Who We Are: The Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society (WEDNS)
The Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society was founded in 2011 in order to support and transform the field of neurosurgery by being geared towards young and upcoming neurosurgeons who we hope will remain innovative, motivated, and ingenious in their contributions to the field.
We seek to support these young neurosurgeons, medical students and residents alike, by providing:
+ A forum for enhancing knowledge of neurosurgical anatomy (which includes, but is not limited to, didactic videos, peer-reviewed literature and moderated forums for discussion. We will have forums specifically aimed at medical students to help discuss the process of applying, making yourself a competitive applicant, and other important considerations such as helping interviewees on the trail coordinate housing and travel arrangements.)
+ A forum for improving operative techniques.
+ A forum for making the optimal clinical decisions based on best available science.
ATTENTION: For those students who will be entering the Match this upcoming year, we will have a confidential and interactive forum where applicants can discuss all details regarding this process amongst themselves. We anticipate a launch date for this forum tentatively around September, 2012.
The Mission of the Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society is to be the global society for neurosurgeons representing education, techniques, and innovations in operative neurosurgery. Through this we hope to enhance the field of neurosurgery and achieve better outcomes by providing education of neurosurgical anatomy, helping improve one's skills and operative techniques, and by providing guidelines for clinical decision-making based on the best available science.
Therefore, we would like to make domestic and global medical students aware of this society by extending a FREE MEMBERSHIP to all interested medical students, regardless of your current career aspirations, as we would like to help provide assistance and answer any questions you may have regarding neurosurgery. If you have any interest at all, we we want to provide the support at making your goals a possibility. To apply simply click here or go to the website (http://www.wedns.org/) and follow the links.
Thank you for your interest and we look forward to having you as a member.
Sincerely,
George Hanna
